Year in Review

At Greenspring Montessori School, we are guided by our Strategic Direction, with six areas we continually focus on each year. Those six areas include:

  • Sharing Authentic Montessori values with the world
  • Cultivating a Community of Empowerment
  • Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging
  • Developing Effective Communicators
  • Enhancing our Campus for Growth
  • Inspiring an Allegiance to Nature

Sharing the Gifts of Montessori Education with the World

As we reflect back on the 2022-23 school year, it is uplifting to see how much we accomplished guided by our Strategic Direction in our small but mighty community. The year overall was a resounding success, both in terms of our service to our children and families and the big work we dug into as a faculty and staff. Together we managed to finalize the creation of our outdoor campus plan, become a Maryland Certified Green School, made significant progress in creating a Sister School program, and perhaps most notably, we launched the Greenspring Center for Lifelong Learning to support and elevate Montessori educators and schools around the world.

It is our deep commitment to our children, our families, and the Montessori method that fuels us to take on these lofty initiatives. In truth, this work is bigger than us all. Together, we strive to provide a nurturing, intentional, and joyful educational model to as many children and families as possible; to grow Montessori for future generations through supporting our educators around the world and helping them to know the profound impact they make in the life of a child; and to steward our land and guide our children toward peace. In the words of Dr. Maria Montessori, “The task of educators is immense because human progress and world peace are in their hands.”

The 2022-23 school year provided many opportunities for growth, reflection, and big work. With the children at the heart of each decision, we continue to build a stronger community interconnected with Montessori worldwide. We are grateful to have you with us on this journey. Thank you. We are, as always, better together!

Sharing Montessori with the World

Guided by our Strategic Direction, we launched the Greenspring Center for Lifelong Learning in December 2022.

The mission of the Greenspring Center is to elevate and support the critical work of Montessori educators, leaders, and schools. We are pleased to share high-caliber Montessori resources including our Voices in Montessori Podcast and Mentoring Communities for new Guides and school leaders.

Podcast Downloads

The Voices in Montessori Podcast has taken off internationally with listeners in South Africa, Canada, Singapore, New Zealand, Spain, India, Austria, Ireland, Italy, Morocco, Iran, Mexico, and Saudi Arabia – to name a few!

Johns Hopkins Education Interns

We are proud to share that we welcomed 10 extended learning students from the Johns Hopkins University School of Education Master of Science in Education International Teaching and Global Leadership (ITGL) cohort to our Greenspring community.

Experts in Education

The Greenspring Center has partnered with 39 experts in education and leadership from around the world for our Mentoring Communities, Workshops, and Podcast.

Cultivating a Community of Empowerment

During 2022-23 we continued our deep commitment to the professional and personal growth of our Montessori educators and leaders.

Growing Montessori Leaders and Educators

Being an educator is hard work and we believe deeply in supporting our people in studying and refining their craft. This year we spent $82,253 on professional development and training for our staff, including sending four of our exceptional team members to Montessori Training. Take a look at the video here to learn more about their experiences.

Notes from Greenspring Families

We love the school for our son. His Guides are wonderful, and so are the other staff that we routinely see and talk to during drop-off, pickup, and events at the school. It’s a wonderful community.

I continue to be amazed and delighted to see how well my two grandchildren are developing in large part by the nurturing they experience in the environment provided by your school and staff.
Thank you.

“Our family has a tremendous amount of gratitude for how Greenspring Montessori has helped to shape our daughters into confident, creative thinkers, who care for their community.”

Diversity Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging

Welcoming Gray

Our New Equity and Belonging Coordinator

During the 2022-23 school year, Greenspring Montessori School made the decision to invest meaningfully into the work of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging by creating a role to facilitate this work. A Hiring Committee set out in search of the right person to support this work in our classrooms and throughout our school. We are so grateful to share that Gray has joined our team for the 2023-24 school year.

I am very excited to learn with and from the diverse community we have here at Greenspring as we work to build connection and compassion, stretch our comfort zones, and create sustainable systems to grow community equity, inclusion, and belonging. I believe we rise by lifting others, and am humbled to engage in this important work with you all.

– Gray, Equity and Belonging Coordinator

Gray’s professional values and priorities are grounded in feminist, anti-racist, and anti-ableist practices with the overarching focus of building community connections. They adore children’s literature and feel that picture books, paired with meaningful experiences and a supportive environment, are the best tools for learning and growing. Gray is also a parent of two Greenspring students. They are passionate about supporting, nurturing, and loving their family.

During the 2023-24 school year, they will be diving into the work of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging by building connections within our family and staff community, observing in our classrooms, and preparing curriculum. They are eager to learn about what matters most to your families as well.

Inspiring an Allegiance to Nature

As part of our commitment to inspiring an allegiance to nature, in 2022-23 we created a Green Schools Committee and received our Maryland Green Schools Certification.

Certified Green School

We are excited to share that Greenspring Montessori School is now recognized as a Maryland Green School with the Maryland Association for Environmental and Outdoor Education! The Maryland Green School Award represents a school-wide commitment to environmental literacy that includes staff, students, and the community.
Throughout the year our Green Schools Committee has been working hard to identify areas where we can improve our sustainability and access to nature, expand upon our outdoor environment curriculum, offer professional development for our staff, and more. We are excited for all of our students to be receiving an outstanding nature education alongside their beautiful Montessori curriculum.
We are among 642 Maryland Green Schools representing 36% of all schools in the state! Special thank you to Sylvia Glassco, Adolescent Community Director and Chair of the Green Schools Committee for leading this work at Greenspring Montessori School!

Creating our Outdoor Plan

Over the past several years, our staff, children, and families have worked with a firm specializing in natural play and learning environments to create a comprehensive Outdoor Plan to enhance our outdoor spaces and bring purposeful nature education to our children. In 2023, we finalized the plan and began fundraising to make it a reality. When complete, our campus will provide wild spaces to explore, as well as quiet spaces for reflection, walking and riding paths for movement and fun, gardens and orchards to plant and tend to, and spaces for our classes and community to gather.

Campus Nature Center

In 2023 we also completed our Montessori Nature Center. We created the Nature Center as an extension of our outdoor learning environments. Our Nature Center is home to many species of animals including a Russian tortoise, geckos, a bearded dragon, hermit crabs, a rabbit, and parakeets, as well as oscar fish, guppies, and beta fish. The Nature Center provides a space for children to develop a broad understanding of nature, encourage a sense of respect and stewardship for the natural world, and care for all the inhabitants of the Center. This nature-based space will offer many ways for our students to meaningfully engage with life and the natural world.

The Greenspring Fund

Our Greenspring Fund captures and celebrates all of the annual giving to the school—time, talent, and treasure. Whether you choose to give to one or all three, every gift to the school makes a significant difference in the education we provide and the experience our children have.
