Welcoming Statement

At Greenspring Montessori School, we welcome and celebrate diverse backgrounds, histories, perspectives, identities, cultures, religions, and races. Our learning environment is strengthened and enriched through a community that reflects the nuances and beauty of an intricate and complex world.

Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging at Greenspring Montessori School

Montessori education, in its essence, is a pedagogy of acceptance, love, and understanding. We are so very lucky that 125 years ago, far ahead of her time, Dr. Maria Montessori built a peace education curriculum to support the work of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging, and was nominated for two Nobel Peace Prizes for her important work.

Our community’s work in Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging is designed to deepen our Montessori practice and make us a stronger, more vibrant, and inclusive community. Yet even with our unwavering adherence to Dr. Montessori’s tenets, we know we must forward the work, taking a stand for equity and justice as models for our children and adolescents. We do this work so that our children have the foundation to move through the world with a deeper understanding of and care for humanity.

Our commitment is that every member of our community experiences the sense of belonging which allows them  to engage fully, share their unique intelligence, take thoughtful risks. The result is a stronger, more dynamic, and vibrant culture. Safety and belonging in our community also provide the foundation for building meaningful relationships, facilitating full emotional development and self-expression, and greater overall achievement. It is the duty of every member of our community to support the work of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging as we guide our students in becoming responsible and engaged citizens of the world.

In 2019, Greenspring Montessori School took on the work of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging as a theme for the coming years, fueling increased professional development opportunities, parent workshops, additional library and classroom resources, and a dedicated parent committee. As the school finalizes the strategic direction, Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging will continue to be at the forefront of the work we do for many years to come.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Parent Committee

The School’s focus on Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging furthers our commitment to maintaining a learning environment where each person is treated with dignity and respect, and where we all have the opportunity to thrive and develop authentic relationships. This focus is fully in line with Montessori principles. An anti-biased approach to education requires critical awareness and thoughtful preparation of self among educators, supports healthy identity development and self-construction among students, and is an essential component of peace education. We envision that our students will value diverse perspectives, celebrate differences, and work to dismantle conditions that lead to systems of privilege and oppression. We approach this work with humility and a willingness to listen, experience discomfort, and grow together.
